When everything changed…

Posted on Posted in Mindset, my journey, Uncategorized
I recently shared my story about all of the symptoms I was experiencing and how I suffered for way too long. You can read the full post here.
Nothing worked for me until I got to the root cause. I couldn’t just work up all my will power to not binge at night…I couldn’t just try to get to bed early to have energy the next day. It wan’t necessarily my fault I was feeling that way. I explain below how the problem was deeper and by getting to the root cause I now see lasting changes.
..It wasn’t all in my head, I wasn’t just a complainer, and it wasn’t necessarily my fault that I couldn’t stick with a diet in the past.
My turning point was soon after having my daughter and making the decision that I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and I couldn’t be the mom I wanted to be, in the state I was in. I wanted more out of life than just needing to nap all the time. That was my driving force to make big changes!
I started researching…a lot. After listening to a lot of podcasts, reading a ton of articles and experimenting with my diet I realized that I had a couple things going on in my body.

1. Discovering Hidden Food Intollerences

Through experimenting with a 3 week elimination diet I discovered I had an intolerance to both gluten and dairy (and later tested positive in lab work for it). I’ve come to learn that so many people have developed a delayed reaction to these foods. BUT we don’t realize we react to them. Since the symptoms are delayed (can be anywhere from 12 hrs to 2 days later) and since we eat these foods every day we don’t realize that is what is causing our problems.  And the symptoms are far ranging. They can be different for everyone. For some it might cause bloating, diahrea or constipation, others it might be extreme exhaustion, others it might be sore joints….  You realize you don’t feel good but you don’t know why.

Some people who do an elimination diet will notice after just 4 days of cutting out the allergenic food that they feel amazing and for some it takes time (up to 6 months). For me it took time. I did start to feel better in that month but it wasn’t a dramatic difference. But when I reintroduced gluten, 2 days later my brain fog was extreme! And with dairy my skin broke out soon after. I later went to a naturopathic doctor and was tested for food intolerances. I showed intolerant to gluten, dairy…and egg. My gluten markers were actually super high! Although no one wants to have an intolerance, getting that confirmation from tests made me feel better. It proved that it “wasn’t in my head”. I also felt like I had an answer. It pointed me in the right direction and that it was the beginning of getting better.

2. Low FODMAP Diet

Many of my symptoms started to go away after cutting out my problem foods but one of my biggest problems, the gas and bloating, were still there. I discovered that a low FODMAP diet could help. (FODMAPS are foods that contain certain types of carbohydrates.) I printed off the list of foods to avoid and committed to cut them out for a couple months and then slowly re-introduce into my diet. After just a couple days the gas and bloating were non existent! Such a relief. And the good part was that I didn’t have to cut those foods out for good. Because of the imbalance my body just needed a break from that particular type of carbohydrate so it could rebalance itself. I can eat most “FODMAPS” now without the gas and bloat.

3. Candida Overgrowth (a gut bacteria imbalance)

I didn’t realize that this was part of my problem until a while later. But by cleaning up my diet along side cutting out allergens it naturally started to rebalance my gut bacteria. I have since taken further action to kill the candida and then add in more of the good bacteria. Side note: if you think you have a candida problem taking probiotics before getting rid of the overgrowth of candida can just add to to the problem. You must first kill the bad bacteria and THEN add in the good.

What I want you to take away from this is…..

Not being able to control your cravings…not having the energy to exercise (or even sometimes perform daily tasks) is not your fault.

You have to get to the root cause of the problem. The cravings, the tiredness, the soreness….it’s NOT that you are lazy or weak! Band-aid solutions don’t work…your problem will just return. What you need is a root cause approach. Something to help your body heal from the inside out. When I realized this- I had an ah-ha moment. I needed to first take out what was causing my system to over-react (gluten, dairy, sugar) then I needed to focus on balancing my gut bacteria…and healing my intestinal lining (which is what led to the allergies). This is why what you’ve been trying so far likely hasn’t worked….whether that is pain reliever, Tums, Immodium, birth control pills (for the acne) …or even will power. Getting to the root cause might be harder in the beginning than the band aide approach but IT WORKS and its a long lasting solution.

I am so passionate about this because I have seen this approach work so many times! I don’t want you to suffer any longer. It’s time to make real change!
